Virtual CTO

Virtual CTO: technical leadership without the full-time cost.

Not every company that needs serious technical leadership is ready for a full-time CTO salary. A virtual CTO gives you that leadership on a fractional basis: architecture decisions, vendor evaluation, hiring guidance and a technical roadmap, scaled to what your stage actually needs.

  • Architecture decisions
  • Vendor evaluation
  • Fractional

What you get

Catch the expensive mistake before it's made.

Architecture calls, stress-tested

Major technical directions reviewed before they're locked in.

Vendor and build-vs-buy calls

Tools evaluated without vendor bias.

Hiring guidance

Role definition, candidate evaluation and team structure.

A fractional cadence

Engaged at the pace of your actual decisions.

The problem

Major technical decisions without technical leadership.

Founders and non-technical leaders end up making architecture and vendor decisions with long-term consequences, without anyone qualified to stress-test them first. Get it wrong and the cost shows up eighteen months later as a rebuild. A virtual CTO exists to catch that class of mistake before it's made, at a fraction of a full-time executive's cost.

Fit

Is this the right model?

Good fit if

  • Consequential technical and vendor decisions are being made without technical leadership in the room
  • You need ongoing architecture and hiring guidance, not a single project delivered
  • Decision volume doesn't justify a full-time CTO salary yet

Not the right fit if

  • You have one specific technical question, where a single advisory engagement may be enough. See Consulting
  • You need engineers doing the building, not leadership guiding it. See Dedicated teams

What a virtual CTO covers

What's included.

  • Architecture review and decisions for major technical directions
  • Vendor and tool evaluation, including build-vs-buy calls
  • Technical hiring guidance: role definition, candidate evaluation and team structure
  • A technical roadmap aligned with business goals, not just engineering preference
  • A standing technical sounding board for leadership, on a fractional cadence

How we work

How we run it.

FAQ

Common questions.

When does a company need a virtual CTO instead of a full-time one?

When the volume of technical decisions doesn't yet justify a full-time executive salary, but the decisions being made are consequential enough that having no technical leadership at all is a real risk. That is commonly somewhere between early product-market fit and Series A or B scale.

What does a typical virtual CTO engagement look like week to week?

A regular cadence of architecture and roadmap reviews, availability for major decisions as they come up, and direct involvement in technical hiring when it's active. It is scoped to a set number of hours or days per month rather than full-time presence.

Can a virtual CTO transition to full-time or help us hire one?

Yes. A common outcome of this engagement is helping define the full-time CTO role once the company is ready, and supporting that hiring process with technical evaluation the rest of leadership may not be positioned to do alone.
